It is only normal for a musician to have a record label – a management under which he can be identified. In Nigeria, the entertainment industry is fast growing and there are a lot of record labels under which most of its musicians and artistes are signed. Some of them include:
Mavin Records which is also called Supreme Mavin Dynasty is a Nigerian record label that is founded by Nigerian artist and producer known as Don Jazzy on the 8th of May 2012. Mavin Records was established shortly after Mo’ Hits Records was closed down because of the departure of one of its owners (D’banj) which happened to be the former label that was owned by Don Jazzy and D’banj. The name “Mavin” refers to someone that is skilled in any area as stated by one of our sources. The artistes in the label have performed songs together such as “Dorobucci”, and “Adaobi”.
The artists that are signed in on Mavin are Tiwa Savage, Dr. SID, D’Prince, Di’Ja, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Johnny Drille, and Poe. The official disc jockey of the label is DJ Big N.
YBNL is a record label in Nigeria that was founded by Nigerian rapper and hip-hop recording artist known as Olamide in the year 2012. The label is well recognized for many hit songs that has been performed by its artistes. Some of the albums to be released by the label is YBNL, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, Street OT, 2 Kings, and Gold among many others.
There are a lot of artistes with talent that have been signed into the label and they include Lil Kesh, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun, Zino, Adekunle Gold, Dj Enimoney, Temmie Ovwasa, Davolee, Lyta, Limerick, Mhiztar Xuttan, picazo, yomi, blaze, and fire boy. There are two producers in the label and they are Young John and Pheelz. The label has been nominated for the City People Entertainment Awards twice both in 2015 and 2016 and in the latter year it won.
HKN which is short for Honourable Kings of New-school is another one of the largest record labels in Nigeria. It was founded by both Davido (David Adeleke) and his cousin B-Red (Adebayo Adeleke). This happens to be the record label under which popular Nigerian artiste, Davido was signed. Davido and other stars made a lot of hits under HKN until the artiste left the label to start his own record label which is known as DMW (Davido Music Worlwide) in which he signed two artists, Dremo and Mayorkun. The other artistes who were signed into HKN along with Davido were B-Red, Danagog (Agunbiade Daniel Damilola), Sina Rambo (Shina Adeleke), Deekay (Dennis Dela-Yola King). HKN is widely known to create good music through its combination of Afropop and Lifestyle.
Penthauze Music is a record label that is based in Nigeria. It was founded by Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike more commonly known by his stage name Phyno who is also the face and CEO of the label. The label made a huge entrance into the entertainment business as a crew in the year 2011 when it released the song “Camera Out”. The record label also saw the release of the debut album of its founder and CEO, Phyno with the title “No Guts No Glory”.
The names of the artists who are signed into Penthauze Music include Umoren Akanimoh Felix (Shugaboi) and Flipside who joined the label in 2011, Yvonne Akuabata Ogbuagu (Storm Rex) that was signed into the label in the year 2014 and Douglas Jack Agu more popularly known as Runtown, although he has now left the label.
Bahd Guys Records
Bahd Guys Records is another famous record label based in Nigeria that got its fame from the hit songs released by artistes signed into the label. It was founded by rapper, singer, songwriter, actor and TV presenter known as Falz (Folarin Falana) who though being a graduate of the University of Reading, England with an LLB degree in Law and being called to Bar in the year 2012, decided to go into music. The owner and CEO of the label stated on occasion that the reason Bahd Guys Records was formed was because of the inability of its founder to get signed into any label during his first few years in the entertainment industry.
At the moment, the only other artiste that is signed into Bahd Guys Records is Sir Dauda who is an associate of the label’s owner and has been featured in the “27” album for such songs as “Confam” and “Boogie”.
