Cyber Criminals Grab £20m From Bank Accounts

Just as the world is spinning forward in the dance of civilization, so is every profession trying to get the new regalia to maintain their royalty and societal relevance. The engineer is has more ICs on his fingers than wires, the accountant has her fingers more on a mouse than ledger books as generally everyone is passing his craft through the refineries of technology so that the craft is not to seen as crude.

Cyber Criminals

But not only the white collar jobs are get packaged, even the black collared jobs are getting more packaged now as the modern criminal prefers a computer keyboard to triggers after all an internet burglary into the online accounts is more modern than trying to break into the safe houses of banks physically. Cybercrime is getting as popular as trekking long distances to celebrate a political victory.

Internet users have been put on alert concerning a strain of malware which has given criminals the opportunity to steal £20m from bank accounts especially in the UK.

Dridex malware which also goes by the name of Cridex and Bugat were developed by cyber criminals to get an illegal harvest of online banking details as the latter knowledge is used to separate owners of the bank account from their hard earned cash.

A computer could get infected when the user of the computer receives documents as well as opening the documents which otherwise seem as legitimate emails.

The National Crime Agency is of the opinion that thousands of computers particularly in the UK have been afflicted have been afflicted with the malware; further revelations showed that majority of the infected computers were Windows users.

The agency has entered into collaboration with the FBI to ‘sinkhole’ the malware so as to prevent infected computers referred to as botnet from getting in touch with the cyber crooks manoeuvering them.

It is on account that a good fraction of the botnet have been freed from the danger they are exposed to, this done to protect victims.

The NCA (National Crime Agency) is thereby advising internet users to make sure they possess modern operating systems as well as anti-virus software installed on their machines so as to safeguard them from further cyber-invasion.

An police approach involving international agencies like the Europol, the GCHQ (General Communications Headquarters UK) and also the Moldovan authorities have been initiated to bring down the advanced cyber criminal network with success in “significant arrests” as more is anticipated.

Mike Hulett, occupying the position of head of operations at the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) announced: “This is a particularly virulent form of malware and we have been working with our international law enforcement partners, as well as key partners from industry, to mitigate the damage it causes.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we expect further arrests to made.”

The FBI’s executive assistant director Robert Anderson also added: “Those who commit cyber crime are very often highly-skilled and can be operating from different countries and continents.

“They can and will deploy new malware and we, along with our partners, are alive to this threat and are constantly devising new approaches to tackle cyber crime.”

This is alarming that as the internet is wedding the whole world into a global community, there are those who have rather sacrificed their intelligence on the altars of crime to rob innocent hardworking people online.
