Microsoft is Letting OneDrive Users Keep Their 15GB of Free Storage After All

Microsoft had almost electrocuted us with shock last month with the announcement of their plans to chop down its free OneDrive storage from 15GB to 5GB.

While the company is not reclining on removing its unlimited storage tier, it was particularly the removal of the free storage that really triggered a real backlash from OneDrive fans. Consequently a petition requesting Microsoft to “give us back our storage” had gathered more than 70,000 votes over at Microsoft’s OneDrive feedback site, and at the moment the company couldn’t hold back its response . “We’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused,” says a Microsoft spokesperson. “We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community.”

Microsoft isn’t making alterations to its plans to erase the unlimited storage, but then the company is preferring to allow OneDrive users to maintain their existing 15GB of free storage as well as the 15GB camera roll bonus (which totals 30GB in free storage). We should note that this wouldn’t be automatic though, and there is the requirement for OneDrive users to opt-in to hold on to their storage.

This implication of this is that the major percentage of regular OneDrive users who have not been brought to speed about the changes will still bear the harshness unless they opt-in to save their storage. Office 365 subscribers who were disturbed by the removal unlimited OneDrive storage removal have some options as well.

The subscription will go back next year surely to 1TB , but OneDrive users who had gotten the additional storage will have the ability to hold to it for say 12 months. Office 365 subscribers can also submit their need of a refund should they not be comfortable with the unlimited storage removal.

Microsoft is as well making provisions for one year of Office 365 Personal to any OneDrive user who uses more than 5GB of free space. Office 365 Personal come along with 1TB of OneDrive space, but it’s also worth acquiring the 30GB of free storage even if you’re offered the Office 365 Personal deal. Of course, it is not too common to see the relative distaste with which Microsoft announces customer changes, but then it is evident the company has paid a listening ear to the feedback here.

The response time of course ran into a month, but then most OneDrive users would applaud the result. “We are all genuinely sorry for the frustration this decision has caused and for the way it was communicated,” says a Microsoft spokesperson.
