How to Stream VR Videos or Movies to Oculus Go from PC or Mac

The Oculus Go is a great VR headset, but it doesn’t have a lot of storage. Best way to watch your many videos and movies on your PC is to stream them. Here’s how:

Watching a movie is a VR headset is really cool because it makes you feel like you’re there. You can get 3D movies that display in VR and also get full VR videos that let you look around and feel like you’re really there.

Do You Have a Plex Server? Just Use the Plex Client

If you’re a serious media-watching person, you probably have a Plex server. If so, grab the Plex client from the Oculus Store. Open it up, and connect your Plex server.

No Plex Server, or Want to Watch Videos Not in Plex? Use Skybox VR Player

If you don’t want to put embarrassing videos on the Plex server, or you don’t want to set up Plex fully and want to rapidly watch some videos to get a glimpse of them, it is easier to have them downloaded on your PC and streamed on your Oculus Go instead of trying to clean up deleted files on the device itself.

If you downloaded many videos on your PC and want to stream them on your Oculus Go headset, an easy method is with the use of Skybox VR Player. This is used by running a small server piece on your actual PC or Mac, adding videos to it and then accessing them using the viewer piece on the actual headset.

This can work for any type of video be it 3D or even 2D.

Setup Your PC or Mac with the Skybox Server

To set up the Skybox server on your PC or Mac, download and install the server application. After the installation, open it up. You can add movie files separately or you can add an entire folder of movies at once. Skybox searches subfolders too.

When the movies are added, they should show up neatly in the list using the file names as the name of the video. But you may have to wait a few minutes for it to generate thumbnails for everything.

Install the Skybox VR Client on Your Headset

Once you have the server running, install the client on your Oculus Go. To do this, head to the Oculus Store, find Skybox VR Player and install it.

When it’s installed, open the application, look on the left-hand menu for the Airscreen option, then you can search for and connect to your server which should appear as your PC’s name.

When you’re connected, you should be able to see all your videos. Click one to start playback.

How to Fix Movies If They Don’t Play in the Right Format

If you have a 3D or VR video that doesn’t play in 3D or VR, you can fix it by pulling up the controls. Click once, and then click the little cube on the far right of the menu. This pops up a window with options for playing in 2D, 3D, or VR mode (and for switching between VR 180 and VR 360). If you’re not sure of the exact format of your video, just keep testing until it looks right.

Skybox can also play videos that are local on the device, so if you download something directly on the headset, it’s going to show up in Skybox as well under All Files instead of Airscreen. Make sure you’re using private browsing mode and also know how to delete downloaded files else you’ll have to clear your browsing history.
