Microsoft Word comes with an in-built page setting that allows you to create books. It doesn’t matter if you intend to create a memoir or event guide, these settings allow you to create a magnificent book or booklet.
Create a Book or Booklet
Open Microsoft Word, note that you must enable the settings before proceeding to write out what you book contains (your content) so that formatting issues will not come up later.
After you have opened Word, click on the “Layout” tab on the ribbon. In the “Page Setup” panel, click the small arrow at the bottom-right.
When you do that, a “Page Setup” window will open and you will find yourself on the “Margin” tab. In this tab, you will be able to set up the margin of the page to suit your desire. By default, “Gutter” margin is set at 0. Leaving it like that may bring some issues later because the gutter margin is the space between your book content and the fold where the pages of the book will be bound. To prevent any issues, set the gutter margin at 1, this will prevent your content from getting lost when folded.
Then, select the arrow next to “Multiple Pages” in the “Pages” pane after which you select “Book Fold” from the drop-down menu. When you select this, you’ll discover that the orientation of your page has been changed to landscape.
You may see something like “Reverse Book Fold”. It is for content that reads from right to left, such as Japanese style books.
After altering the settings, click “OK”.
With that you have successfully changed the page setup for creating a book or booklet. There are a lot of things you can do from this point contingent on the requirements for your book. You may want to add a header or footer, create a table of contents, or give page numbers so that you can easily navigate your book, your choice.
It is worthy of note to split it into multiple booklets just in case you have a very lengthy document to write, and when you’re done, you can bind them up into one book.
Print your Book or Booklet
When you are done writing your book, it is now time to print. Select the “File” tab, then select “Print” in the left-hand pane that opens.
After that, select the second option in the “Settings” group.
A drop-down menu will appear in which you have a myriad of printing styles. If you have a duplex printer, select (1) “Print on Both Sides” (and then select between flipping the page on the long or short edge). If the printer you are using does not have this function, select (2) “Manually Print on Both Sides”.
When all that is done, select Print.
