If you’ve been following this blog, you would know that Material Design is a User Interface style designed by Google. It runs on most of their services; Android, ChromeOS and now YouTube. I must say, material design is not horrible; actually it may be the best UI I have seen in a really long time. If you would like to test it out on Android, you’d need to run Lollipop and higher(if your device supports it) – let’s not rant too much about Andy and Material design; what we need to talk about is YouTube and Material Design.
Before we go into this, there are a few things you should know:
- First off, from all indications, it works only on Chrome; if you see have a different opinion, do let us know.
- To use it on Chrome requires a few tweaks and setting your region to US, it seems to not work in other regions.
Before we go into the tweaks, a few side-by-sides of the old vs the new YouTube;
Not so bad eh? I must say I’m quite impressed that they’re bring this to YouTube web; though when they gave the Android app it’s overhaul, it was a tad confusing, then I got used to it (after wishing for the old one back a thousand times). Don’t misunderstand me, the overhaul wasn’t horrible but as Netwon’s law implies; we do not like change – even this one might be met with mixed reactions I bet.
Seeing that they kept the template basically the same with just a few mods here and there, we should be able to adjust to this in no time when it rolls out; or you could get a head start by installing Chrome and following these steps. i got this one from reddit. Let’s begin:
- Log on to www.youtube.com/?gl=US
- Hold down (Ctrl + Shift + I); it launches the developer tools.
- Delete VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE cookie for YouTube – you’ll get this in the resources tab
- Go to the console and set a new cookie for VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE using the following parameters
document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=Qa1hUZu3gtk;path=/;
domain=.youtube.com";
With that you should be done! Let us know how you like the new YouTube interface. If you do encounter any difficulties during your tweaking; let us know and we’ll help you out.
