How to update your Chromebook

Chrome OS gets major updates to its operating system once in every six weeks and one of the reasons for this is that Google is constantly trying to provide security patches so as to give its users a secure experience with its product. Updates on the Chrome OS are frequently download and installed automatically in the background. However, there is a way for you to find out if your Chromebook is running on the latest software build or update.

To begin, whenever there is a new software build available, you will get a notification on the Chromebook that it has been downloaded and installed mostly because you are going to have to restart the device in order for the install process to be complete.

At the bottom right of your Chromebook screen, click on the clock. This will open the system tray and notification panel. If there is an update, there will be a notification at the top of the menu. Once you see this, click “Restart to Update”.

One thing you must note is to save whatever it is you were working on before you click the “Restart to Update” on your Chromebook. If you fail to do this, the data that you have not saved will be lost after your Chromebook restarts.

If however you don’t see this notification, click the Settings cog.

Once you have done that, click the Hamburger menu after which you click on “About Chrome OS” at the bottom of the menu.

Click “Check for Updates”. If the device finds an update, it will automatically begin to download it.

As soon as the update is downloaded, you will have to restart the Chromebook in order for the process to be completed. Click “Restart”.

But if what you were working on can’t wait, you can go ahead and finish it up. Close the menu where you updated the OS and the Chromebook will install the update at a later time when you restart.

In order to be sure that your Chromebook is now up to date after the restart, go back to the “About Chrome OS” page or you can type chrome://settings/help into the Chrome browser Omnibox. On this page you will be able to see “Your Chromebook is up to date” as long as you installed the update.
